I dont have any photos of Q 0-8-0s, but the USRA Proto models of the 0-8-0 and 0-6-0 done by Walthers both had a oxide roof. I dont if they did the research to support that color. Nelson Moyer From:

Louis, I looked at the 0-8-0s on Flickr, and while trying to guess color from black and white photos is iffy at best, some of the photos suggest a lighter roof color than the rest of the engine. None

To me both color photos of 543 and the one of 545 pretty plainly show the mineral red cab roof color, which was in fact the standard for CB&Q steam locomotives from 1925 on. But you have to consider

Hol had the answer. For modelers, the best approach is to paint the cab roof oxide and weather it heavily with dark gray and black, leaving the hint of oxide I saw on 543. Of course if the engine was
