Photographic film, especially back then, was not very red sensitive.  In fact, without special sensitization, film in its 'native' form is almost totally insensitive to red light.  So it rendered red

Louis- By the time this car was built the color was mineral red.   Definitely not black.   Note the difference in the value of the black background on the herald and the carbody. The G Gauge and O Sc
