SD38-2's were 6 axle with 6 wheels per truck as opposed to GP38-2's which were 4 axle locomotives. The SD38-2 basically resides in a SD40-2 body with a different fan arrangement on top. I don't recal

I forgot to add that the Athearn SD40-2 would be the logical starting point for an SD38-2. Ken Thompson

The UP's current Sterling/Julesburg switcher is stenciled on the cab as an SD38-2(#795), yet it is only a four axle unit. I too have been wondering what the difference is. Looks like a GP38-2 to me.

All EMD SD's are six axle, and all GP's (general purpose) are four axle. Ken Thompson

That's what I've always thought too. I did however mention the wrong number of the unit. I'd have to get the film developed to get the right one. I took them about two weeks ago only because I though
