- SD38-2's were 6 axle with 6 wheels per truck as opposed to GP38-2's which were 4 axle locomotives. The SD38-2 basically resides in a SD40-2 body with a different fan arrangement on top. I don't recal

- The UP's current Sterling/Julesburg switcher is stenciled on the cab as an SD38-2(#795), yet it is only a four axle unit. I too have been wondering what the difference is. Looks like a GP38-2 to me.
