friend. of for Gene, You are probably looking at what was known as "Russia Iron". For over 50 years, ending around 1900, chemically pickled sheet iron was used for boiler jacketing on many engines.

Gene Marshal is probably right that the boiler jacket was "Russia Iron".Also the smokebox would be a dark gray "Graphite". The rest of the engine would be black. For a treatise on Russia Iron go to:

Gene -- I'm curious to know what picture you're looking at and what year (more or less) you're trying to represent. A few of the early C&Sng engines may have retained Russia Iron boiler jackets for a

Marshall & Johnathan Thanks for your input. The picture I am looking at was included with the decal sheet and is a xerox copy of a photo. There are no dates on the photo but the engine looks pristine
