There was another story I remember from my father Karl Rethwisch they had five or six GN F units west and somewhere  on this trip one of the trailing units started blowing black smoke that would make a steam engine envious so as any good fireman would do he ran back threw the units and when he got to the troubled locomotive to take it off line being a B unit its all in the engine room but there was so much oil on the decking he told me they actually dragged timbers inside the locomotive from beet Car side height extenders so the crew wasn't walking in oil and made it very slippery witch he told me this probably saved his life because in his hurry to get it shut down he couldn't  get stopped in time and ran right past the prime mover and before he could tern around it  blew up and said if the deck wasn't full of oil and stopped in time he would have been right next to the failure and would have gotten burned from crank case oil or worse hit by flying debris.
So after that learning experience he let the units take care of themselves  good or bad.

Ed Rethwisch
