Thread-topic: [CBQ] CB&Q E-5
Tom:

I don't believe I have ever seen, either personally or in a photo, an A-B-A set of E5s in passenger service, which, of course, is not to say it didn't happen.  By the 1960s the remaining E5s on the Q were split between Chicago and Lincoln, with the 9912AB operating out of Chicago primarily to the Twin Cities but occasionally toward Denver, and usually together, though one of the attached images shows 9912B in Denver without its mate.  The 9914AB and 9915AB worked from Lincoln to Chicago on the Nebraska Zephyr and from Lincoln to Kansas City, with occasional runs west to Denver and even less often on the various Lines West local mail trains — 29-30, 31-32, 33-34 and 42-43, often as the sole unit on those trains.  In 1958 the nose "grille" plates were removed from 9914A and B and 9915A to facilitate access to the MU plugs; 9915B, happily, kept its plates, as the attached June 1963 view at Kansas City shows.  9914B was one of the first units to receive red nose stripes, as the attached June 13, 1958, view shows.  Out here in Colorado, of course, from the mid-1950s through early 1968 we were blessed with a virtual plethora of E5s.

All I hope for, is that when the project is officially announced for pre-orders,  everyone is willing to open their wallets

Thanks Dave for all your help on this project! Although I model 1965 to merger, my wallet is open and ready to pre-order an A-B set, maybe eve an A-B-A set.

Which brings me to an important question. But first an E5 timeline from BB10 on the CB&Q proper E-Units:

1955: E5A 9909, E5A 9910A, E5B 9910B, E5A 9911A, and E5B 9911B are all transferred to the C&S and FW&D

1957: E5A 9913 is transferred to the C&S

1960: E5A 9914B is wrecked at Nodaway, MO on 8/22/60 and dismantled in December 1960

1961: E5A 9914A is transferred to the C&S on 9/20/61

So for us 1960's to merger modelers, by the end of 1961 there were only four E5's left on the CB&Q:

1963: E5A 9915A is wrecked at Bigelow, MO on 4/22/63. It remains on the CB&Q roster until traded in to GE in March 1965 for U25B's

1965: E5A 9912A, E5B 9912B, E5A 9915B are traded in to GE in March 1965 for U25B's

So for us late era modelers, the an E5 A-B-A set lasted till trade-in to GE, officially listed as 3/65.

But when was the last time these last three Q E5's ran in actual service on the CB&Q?

Did they run all the way up until their trade-in in March 1965? Or even perhaps later? Sometimes units were "traded in" on new locomotives, but actually ran after their trade in date. They ran until the new locomotives were delivered. This is important because the CB&Q U25B's weren't built until 9/64 (100 and 101) and 10/64 (102-105). That's 18 months after the E5's were "traded in" to GE. Which brings up the question as to when the Q actually stopped running the "traded in" E5's and then sent them to GE.
