I have been trying to figure out the spur from Gladstone to the river. I haven't found anything. However, the road going to Lock 18 is elevated and once it gets across the Henderson River is a straight line. It is pretty swampy around there and logic would say the road was the construction railroad roadbed. Old photos show cranes on track building the structure. My guess is they had to come into the place by railroad.
We used to spend a lot of time at Lock 18 before 911. It was fun to be there at midnight and watch the tows lock through with their floodlights. Now there are fences and gates in areas we used to go through. We did get to lock through once on a barge tour sponsored by the Illinois Corn Growers. The barge had several speakers on the subject of building a 1200 ft. lock to replace the 600 ft. lock. Tows get through Keokuk fast because they don't have to double lock.
We found an old postcard of Lock 18 at Weird Harold's in Burlington. It shows one lockmaster's house on site. We believe that house is now on the main north-south street in Gladstone.
