Granted this is a modelling question rather than a CB&Q question, but hoping someone here may have had the same issue with a solution. Years ago I bought unmarked versions of BLI's CZ cars. These were the early releases that were nickel plated rather than painted as BLI did later with an Al-Clad type paint. They were clear coated with the same finish used on their completed cars. It was a clear coat with a noticeably golden hue. I stripped the cars to put on a better finish. That was a challenge but I succeeded.
I'm trying to find a clear coat that bonds to these similarly to the original paint but so far have failed. I tried Tamiya's semi-gloss clear and do like the resulting appearance. However, if I drag a fingernail across the car it easily removes the paint. The original finish was sturdy. I did some (not a lot yet) of research and in doing so found Tamiya's metal primer #87204. It's a clear primer than can be air-brushed. I'm wondering if anyone has used it and can speculate on its results on a nickel plated surface. It might work as the final coat as well but we'll see. It seems to not be available in the States so I suspect there have not been many users here.
The original coating may have been an enamel like Scalecoat, but I don't know that. SC gloss finish does have a bit of a golden hue as well. It's been suggested to me that (should I actually find some) adding a few drops of ATSF blue does reduce the golden hue somewhat.
OK, I'm hoping someone has insight, Thx
Lyle D
