All,

Editorially, the BRHS uses the following for consistency:

  • Diesel locomotives:
No hyphens are used for locomotives used on the Q with a few exceptions. See list below.
  • Steam locomotives:
Only one hyphen should be used. Example: O-5A and not O-5-A. See detailed list below
  • Waycars:
No hyphens are used except for the CW class passenger waycars.
    For example: NE 1, NE 13, CW-1, CW-2, etc.

Jack - "Class" is not quite as uncomplicated as Dave might indicate.  Two early "classes" of Q steam locomotives when they became obsolete and were all retired, their "classes" were never used again. Then, when some "classes" of power were converted from one wheel arrangement to another, they changed "class." Plus, as for the placing of the "hyphens," there are variations from one roundhouse to another as to where the "hyphens" were placed when painting of which there's photographic evidence in BRHS Flickr.  Also, different wheel arrangements ended-up lumped under the same "class," such as Class O-4 2-8-2's with Class O-5 4-8-4's.  Plus, some oil burners such as the Class O-5-B locomotives carried the "B" to denote oil burner, but, for example, the Class O-4 locomotives did not...... There's just enough variation to make things interesting and, at times, a little confusing.  The style guide is just what it says, it's a guide and not absolutely definitive. "Class" would make for an interesting, informative and "classy" article in the BULLETIN for our newer members - Louis

Sounds just like what I need. Thanks.
I will use a little SQL (find and replace) to get all of the class syntax uniform once I know what the correct style should be.

To all:
I am planning on making a new BRHS search feature in the Members Only area just for steam locomotives. It will combine all of the photos for a given steam locomotive with the current roster data all on one web page. All BRHS members will be able to add to (or correct) the information. Some steam locomotives in the steam engine roster are without any photos. Some steam locomotives in the roster have over 20 photos.  This feature will sort of follow the way that stations are presented in the 'Q Rail Network' feature.

To get this done I need to have all of the titles of all steam locomotives follow the "Preferred Title Syntax for Steam Locomotives: capitalized road + engine number + , (comma) + [wheel] + [class] + [-other information]"  and the road should include '&' as in 'CB&Q' not 'CBQ'.  Anyone looking to help with this, please do.

When I get home I'll send our Style Guide which gives the standard way to hyphenated the locomotive classes. You are correct, the class corresponds to the wheel arrangement and the number represents different versions of that wheel arrangement,  and the alpa suffix represents variants of that locomotive.

Subject: [BRHSlist] Steam engine classes - what do they mean?

Hello my friends:

I have been looking at the photos of steam locomotives on the BRHS web site.  Most photo's titles include the road, the engine number, wheel arrangement, and the engine class.

I am curious about the CLASS. This to me (computer programming guy) is a code for some features or characteristics of the locomotive. But I can't find any site on the web that translates this code into the type of locomotive it is.

Dcode the code

Can anyone point me to a place on the web that explains each of these classes?  Perhaps the BRHS web site should offer this guide to steam locomotive codes for the visitors? There must be someone besides me that does not know what they mean.

Correct syntax

Is the code correct with or without the '-' hyphen in the code? I see classes such as D4A and D-4A and F1 and F-1, etc. While the syntax is not important to most viewers, it is important to me as it effects the searching and sorting of engines in the photo feature and I would like them to be uniform for all titles.  We should not require users search for 'D-4-A' and then 'D4A' and then 'D-4A' to find engines of this class.

Thank you for helping we with this.
