[CBQ] Steam engine classes - what do they mean?

Hello my friends:

I have been looking at the photos of steam locomotives on the BRHS web site.  Most photo's titles include the road, the engine number, wheel arrangement, and the engine class.

I am curious about the CLASS. This to me (computer programming guy) is a code for some features or characteristics of the locomotive. But I can't find any site on the web that translates this code into the type of locomotive it is. 

 

Dcode the code

Can anyone point me to a place on the web that explains each of these classes?  Perhaps the BRHS web site should offer this guide to steam locomotive codes for the visitors? There must be someone besides me that does not know what they mean.

 

Correct syntax

Is the code correct with or without the '-' hyphen in the code? I see classes such as D4A and D-4A and F1 and F-1, etc. While the syntax is not important to most viewers, it is important to me as it effects the searching and sorting of engines in the photo feature and I would like them to be uniform for all titles.  We should not require users search for 'D-4-A' and then 'D4A' and then 'D-4A' to find engines of this class.
