I tried the alcohol then Dulcoat method a few times but I didn’t like the effect.

 

Im also a 1/48 & 1/35 armor modeler. I gotten a number of good weathering tips and techniques from military modelers. I recently used oil pant as a type of filler to lighten certain areas of 

a tank model.

 

I have used Ammo by MiG Oilbrushers to weather some Tangent tank cars. Basically to show fading on the top of black tank cars.

 

An additional question is how to keep the white lettering from from changing color to much. Use fine paint brushes or Tamiya fine tip Q-tips and thinner to remove the paint from the lettering? 

There are many enamel and acrylic premixed filters available to change the hue or fade paint. This was one method I was thinking about trying. But most are tailored more towards military equipment colors. But there are some greys, tans and yellows. You are right about getting some cheap boxcars to try on before trying something on a couple of Tangent boxcars.
