For CB&Q freight car red, some modelers have used ART reefer yellow, which isn’t bright yellow. I tried that but wasn’t satisfied with the results. I’ve used chrome oxide or rust to fade the paint. All of my freight car painting is done with Tru color paints.

 

Chinese Red is past my era, but I would suggest that you experiment with small amounts of mineral red, chrome oxide and rust, and see if you get the effect you want. You might also try a light tan or gray to dull the red. I think you’re right about white, because it pinkened mineral red paint, and I think that effect would be worse with a bright red.

I need some advice on how to fade the paint onfreight cars painted Chinese Red. My thought is that using white would cause the paint to look pink. I only want slight fading. Thank you for the help.
