Fade coats are usually airbrushed, but weathering is by a variety of methods, including oils and acrylics in tubes, chalks like PanPastels, and colored or watercolor pencils. Some weathering effects can be airbrushed, but most weathering is with one or more of the media I mentioned above with oils and tube acrylics applied as washes and chalks applied with sponges.

 

I didn’t think of it earlier, but some have airbrushed a light application of alcohol after cars have been painted and clear coated with DulCote to blush the finish.

 

Your best bet is to experiment on some old Athearn cars until you develop a system that works for you.

Thank you for the suggestions. Now I need to decide how to fade the cars. Airbrush, oil paint filters, pigments or combination.
