David - Yes, it makes sense that the four Midland Electric 0-6-0's would move over the C&NW from Trivoli to Peoria to Sterling via single-line service! I imagine that all of them would've been in poor mechanical condition at the time. Much appreciate your clarification - Louis

The ex-M&StL 0-6-0s were assigned to MECC's Rapatee Mine just west of Middle Grove. MECC was acquired by Peabody Coal Co. in 1963, which closed the Rapatee Mine and opened the Elm Mine near Trivoli in 1968.

On October 28, 1964, Ed Johnson noted and photographed 80, 81, 84 and 87 at Chicago & North Western's Adams Street Yard in Peoria, so they likely moved via single-line service (C&NW) from Middle Grove to Sterling.

Here's a question for our Peoria, IL, area railroad historians. In November 1964, Peabody Coal sold their Midland Electric ex-M&StL 0-6-0's to Northwestern Steel & Wire in Sterling, IL, for scrapping.  Does anyone know if the 0-6-0's were routed to Sterling over the M&StL by then owned by the CNW, or were they routed over the Q via Peoria - Galesburg - Denrock - Agnew - Sterling?

The M&StL interchanged with Midland Electric at Trivoli, IL.  I do not know if or if not the Q directly interchanged, or if cars were handed off in Peoria to the M&StL.  Two images of Midland Electric Nos. 80 and 81 have recently surfaced on the Internet showing them both sitting in the steel mill yard waiting to be scrapped. Any additional information or clarification will be welcomed - Louis
