Mark,
Sounds like you checked out the rest of
the Time Table.
ATSF No 53 runs south from Denver’s Rice Yard to South
Denver. SD is south end staging on the layout, and it’s
just a 40 foot (~12m) run down a helix. On the prototype, SD is the start
of the Joint Line to Pueblo.
No 53 and its northward counterpart No 52
are one of three pairs of through freights that connect Rice Yard with
SD. Not as exciting to watch as the 210 foot (~65m) run north to Longmont
(north staging), but those three pair balance the car flow between the SD and
Longmont on the layout.
My Rice Yard switch engines are lettered
for both the C&S and ATSF, like the prototype, as the C&S provided yard
service for both railroads in Denver.
(ATSF did the same in Colorado Springs and Pueblo.)

Here is the
next operations-oriented video on my HO scale Colorado & Southern Ry,
entitled “Thru Freight Ballet”:

This video
shows the power of the Time Table schedule. Day and night action as
passenger and freight trains meet on the single track main line. Eight
trains – Five meets – No train orders.
Like the previous videos, it's a bit different than most, and I hope you enjoy
it.
Thanks.
