Hello,

Does anyone know the route taken by KCS unit grain trains from Council Bluffs to Kansas City?

The line to the north isn't a through route anymore. It looks like aside from unit coal trains and unit trains to Bunge, there isn't other traffic on the line. Both of those customers would be more likely to head east or west at Pacific Junction than south, so there was probably no reason to keep the diamond in place. With that said, it looks like the diamond was removed between 1955 and 1969 per Historic Aerials, so the need for the through route was likely gone by then as well. The yard east of the diamond was still in place then, so any train that needed to go south could easily pull into the yard to change ends and then head through the wye to continue on.

I was on Google Maps and was looking at the actual junction in Pacific Junction, Iowa.  I noticed that the East-West line runs straight through the crossing.  It appears that the North-South line used to cross the East-West line there, but the track has been removed from the diamond.  Can anyone tell me about this, when it was done, and its rationale?  For a train to continue South to North it would involve quite a feat of turning onto the SE track to the East-West line. then backing up the train so that it can turn onto the.NW connecting then going North again, all the while blocking one or more of the East-West mainline(s).

Thanks;
