Rupert, Just a hunch on my part. The gon was to be spotted for coal unloading or pulled after being emptied. The cars were shoved too far or when the box car idlers coupled into the gon the “joint” didn’t make and the crew was going a bit too fast.

Three freight cars (GA-1 gondola 79691, boxcar possibly numbered 3650, and a foreign box car) are halfway up a wooden building.
The awning above the cars would suggest that it was a loading or unloading point. Has a string of cars been pushed too far?
The photo would probably date to between 1907 when the gondola was built and 1910, the latest that the first box car would have been running
