Great issue! Growing up in Western Springs, I do have a less than stellar memory of the IHB. Going to Scout-O-Rama at the Reynolds Aluminum plant and the Museum of Science & Industry usually means we started going east on 47th. Our hearts would drop if we saw the gates down as we knew how slow the freights were. After I got my license I found I could sometimes out run them by driving north on East Ave or Bluff/Tilden and find the gates still up at Cossitt. Tim Long Charlottesville VA
