I too have heard about the "infamous"  "dutch drop" but never participated in that  "most surely against the rules maneuver".  My experience with the "regular" drop was just to ride the car..Never was I allowed to be the "pin puller" or the "switch thrower"  What I did, quite proudly a few times was as the car (and brake) rider on a load being dropped into a warehouse I rode the car right down to the "doorway" where the car was to be spotted.  Hence the engine didn't have to come back in on the warehouse track to make the correct door spot.

Hello Lenny, Leo and group  We used to have to do a dutch drop at Alexis on the Alpha road switcher.  The main track went southwest out of Rio and had a stub track that ran northeast off of the main at Alexis.  The part between Alexis and Monmouth had already been abandoned and they left about 25 car-lengths of room west, past the stub track switch.  We went over to Alexis to pickup 5 empty covered hoppers but had no way to get the engine on the east side of the cars  The conductor told the other brakeman and I that we had to catch the cars as they went by and starting tying brakes because it was downhill toward Monmouth.  So we went into the elevator track engine lite, pulled the cars out to the main and shoved them back east towards Rio.  I stayed at the switch, the other brakeman rode the back of the engine to pull the pin and the conductor was riding a brake in the middle of the cars.  We took off westward the brakeman cut the engine off, ran to the switch, I threw the switch and put the engine in on the elevator track and lined it back for the main once the engine had cleared in on the elevator track.  The other brakeman and I caught the cars as they went by and started tying brakes.  It took a lot longer to stop 5 empty hoppers than I thought it would.  We got within 4 or 5 car lengths of the end of track before they stopped. I think we left the way car and the rest of our train at Rio.  Bud Linroth

Lenny,

I’ve heard the term. Don’t recall ever being involved in one so I’m not qualified to describe that far more risky maneuver than a straight drop.

Years ago on this list Karl Rethwhisch described a Dutch drop that was required east of Tampico  on this list but someone more familiar than I needs to describe.
