Mark, This is a problem for states such as Wyoming. And the problem is
because when railroads issued their industry guides, industries
were only listed at competitive points. So if the CB&Q was the
only railroad in town, there is no easy record of what industries
were served and what the nature of business of the
industry/business. Some of it can be guesstimated from sources
such as Sanborn maps. But for many smaller towns/cities the
Sanborn map updates stopped anywhere from the mid-1920s to just
prior to Word War II. The C&NW did issue industry guides, but the last I've seen is
circa Word War II. Now a little of the Wyoming information was
contained in the 1955 directors report on the Denver-Billings
line. But is was very general in this report and not to the level
of detail from other sources. But this is where members can come
in and add customers/detail to what already is listed. For example, I sent Jack information in this format:
This is the level of detail that some of the industry guides provided. Some were more general like this example for Billings MT:
There is also operational detail in
some of industry guides like this listing for Omaha:
Information about customers can also be
gathered from employee timetables. This is an example:
I'm all for including as much
information as possible such as addresses etc. can jog people's
minds or make it easier to research more about the
industry/business.
This has been over a 20 year project
for some of us in conjunction with the Operations SIG. Making this
information to many people as possible is the entire idea.
Look at
<https://www.opsig.org/Resources/IndustryDB>. Click on the
file InputOutput.txt. This is an attempt to generalize the types
of products that inflow and outflow from various industrial
customers.
Most of this is for a limited audience,
so it is up to those of us who are interested to make it happen.
