Thanks. 

I found the car assignments to be fascinating but also a little disheartening. The whale bellies you mention probably never made it to the area I model. I bought a couple many years before understanding car assignments and routing.

Some of it is. I did a lot of contributing to the NMRA Operations Sig database when Bill Jewett got it started at least 20 years ago. For those unaware of it, you can access it here: <https://www.opsig.org/Resources/IndustryDB>.

I sent Jack a lot of this about 2 years ago for the web site. This is from my own personal sources, the Op Sig database,  and the railroad industry guides that are sold by Ted Schnepf. For Q modelers with operating layouts, the Chicago Industry Guides Ted sells are essential.

I should note for those not purchasing offerings from the BRHS Archives, the recently offered 1955 reports on the Chicago-Omaha, Omaha-Denver and Denver-Billings lines have industry information. This is especially true for the Denver-Billings line report.

Another good source for late 1960's modelers are the Car Assignment lists being offered by BRHS Archives. A 1968 version has already been offered. I have recently scanned a CB&Q January 1970 special car assignment report to be offered by the Archives in the near future.

For example, did you know the whole series of 50 whale belly covered hoppers that the Q purchased in 1967 from ACF were assigned to Dundee Cement near Clarksville MO? Dave Lotz offers HO resin models via Q Connection. This is the type of information offered in these documents.
