Here's a pic from 1971 which shows an inbound train with what appears to be two former C&NW flat top coaches, several gallery cars, and then a power coach on the rear:

Overland did the power coaches in HO - not sure how you'd go about kitbashing one.

Don,

I think Steve was referring to the two sets of flat top coaches used as alternates to the double decks that were being rotated to shop for HEP conversion during 1973. I remember GN sky blue paint jobs and possibly some CNW yellow cars.

For your modeling keep in mind that prior to HEP conversion all Dinkies with more than a single double deck had a power car which were former suburban coaches modified to supply electric to each train.

Hi Steve, Leo and Bryan,

Thanks for the great info.  This really helps shape my plans.  I had thought about making the turntable a static display, but now I'm compelled to make it operational.   I don't have a source for gallery cars yet, but I know Scott and others are working on it.

I'm curious about Steve's comments on the single level cars (which were not in my modelling plan until now).  Were they heavyweights, lightweights or a mix?   Any suggestions on HO models for them?   Were they they for protection, or did they have regular runs?

P.S.  I just read Leo's second Dinkies article in the BN magazine.  Great stories, as always, Leo.  Thank you.

Thanks to all!

Hi Don,

To answer you last question, 100% push-pull operation did not come until cab cars 796-815 were delivered in 1973. Having trains without cab cars along with a few that do would be accurate for 1966. Only six cab cars were delivered to the Q in 1965, which was not enough to equip all the dinkys to push-pull.

I'm laying track for my Aurora Station.  I'm modelling 1966, with the intent to use push-pull consists (although I might include a mix of trains without a cab control car).   Looking at the the track plan, I started to wonder how the west switches would be used.   Originally, they would be needed to pull engines off incoming trains so the locos could be turned for the return trip.
But in the push-pull era, did the west switches see much use?

With no need to turn locos, did the turntable see much use?

When was the conversion to 100% push-pull complete?

Thanks!
Don Winn
