Thanks. I'll keep that in mind if I decide to the train in the late 60s, but right now my interest is the mid to late 50s.

The Q "elephant" style consists could be seen at any time, but in the late 1960's (can't recall the exact date off hand but I think it was 1968) it became the standard/preferred set-up. That being said, I have documented photos of both mixed (forward and backward) and elephant style consists on passenger trains between Chicago and Mpls/StP in 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969. In the BRHS Photo library there is a photo of westbound 31, the Empire Builder, in 1968, with five E8's and E9's with units facing both directions. So my evidence from the 1965-1969 clearly shows you could run them either way and still be prototypical.

NOTE: None of my photos, however, show the Q running the lead E-unit backwards. :-)
