All - Let's not forget Hol Wagner's excellent 415 page "The Colorado Road" book that covers the history, motive power and equipment of both the Colorado & Southern and Fort Worth & Denver RRs.  Published in 1970, copies can be found on the Internet from a number of used book dealers - Louis

Thanks for plugging Overton Ken.  Gulf to the Rockies is on my shelf, next to several other conventional first-order railroad histories of the era.  I thought the blog above represented an interesting dive into the same history from the frequently overlooked popular/public sentiment side.  Where Overton had access to the primary source internal record, this represents an outside-in perspective on the events of the era as recorded by the non-railroad press. 

Casting a wider net for a broader perspective on the subject.
