Thanks for plugging Overton Ken.  Gulf to the Rockies is on my shelf, next to several other conventional first-order railroad histories of the era.  I thought the blog above represented an interesting dive into the same history from the frequently overlooked popular/public sentiment side.  Where Overton had access to the primary source internal record, this represents an outside-in perspective on the events of the era as recorded by the non-railroad press.  

Casting a wider net for a broader perspective on the subject.
