One of the most visible differences between a "regular" SD7/SD9 and "lightweight" SD7/SD9 is the fuel tanks below the mid-point of the frame. The standard SD7/SD9 had a set of two fuel tanks between the two trucks. The lightweight SD7/SD9 had one fuel tank that was next to long hood rear truck. Another weight reduction was no steam generator and the associated water tank. The lightweight version was intended for branchline service to operate over light rail.
