Actually, the name from 1872 to 1971 was the U.S. Post Office Department, and it was a cabinet level branch of the U.S. government.  The Railway Mail Service was a branch of the POD.

The date of 1971 reflects when the US Postal Service was created from the US Mail and spun off as an independent agency.  Until then the US Mail was a cabinet level department of the United States Government.  The Postal Service as a whole actually predates the formation of the United States and according to Wikipedia was formed in 1775 during the Second Continental Congress.

We are going to eventually get our Bulletins by the way... it's just going to take a little while for us to dig out from all the mail that has been set aside during the Christmas rush.  We're starting to work thru the backlog at my facility and I enjoyed seeing the Walther's Flyers going thru our magazine and catalog sorter that Bill Hirt mentioned the other day!  I don't see our Bulletins in the mail but I do see some of the publications from White River like the CNWHS magazines occasionally go thru our facility in Champaign, IL.

Yes, the Postal Service is the 'new' name.  Before that it was the 'US Mail'.
