The residents of Missouri have two pronunciations for their state. The Kansas City Star did a poll back in the early 70's and 46-47% used one and 46-47% used the other from KC to Jeff City to StL.

I always say Washington state because here in the east because so many people don't even know about the beautiful place on the west coast, they only think of the cess pool here on the east coast. Most Yankees think way out west is Pittsburg, PA.

Here in NC we have to refer to Washington, NC as Little Washington.

Sorry if I offend you with state, but I have to make the clarifications.

Joel McCurry

Growing up in Quincy, IL  we would constantly hear "Mizzura" for Missouri.

This is true, but we certainly hear "Illinoise"  from all you non-locals...  ;-)

You never hear someone say Iowa State or Illinois State

As a former (and probably future) resident of the great state of Washington, I can't tell you how many times I've had to tell people, "no, the state, not the city" when they ask where I live, where I'm from or where I'm going.  This is especially true for most folks east of the Rockies.  Sometimes it helps if I'm wearing my Wazzu sweatshirt, but not always!

It is the same reason we never say we are from Chicago..... always careful to describe Our former abode as a suburb apart from it.   If pressed, we will admit to living in cRook County and that being one of the prime reasons we got out.
Take the suffix  “State” as others being overly courteous.

You nail it!  The issue is Washington vs. Washington D.C.  Granted, your frustration is noted, but I'd be the first to ask for a qualifier to which Washington is being referenced as some forget to add D.C. when referencing the city Washington D.C. vs. Washington, the State.

Of course, I'm from Texas and that could be the problem too!

I know this is a little off the subject, but why is it when someone from out side of the Northwest refers to it as Washington State, such as mentioned about our states apple crop. If you look at any map or even our state flag it is just Washington. You never hear someone say Iowa State or Illinois State, so why do we have to put the word state after Washington. As someone who works in the newspaper business, I am aware of the Associated Press style that many in the media use, refers to it as state to differentiate from the city on the east coast, but that city is Washington D.C. which is what all maps and everything else state. Sorry for my venting, but it just bothers many of us here in Washington.
