Bill-
I believe the A-B-B-A sets were only drawbared between the A and the B units.
The B units had a coupler on the end as built...even the FTs. So they could
have been operated as A-B units at any time although before the renumbering it
could have caused a conflict with two 116 units on the property.
I'm making these statements without checking references so I could be wrong...

Charlie,
Yes, I am aware of the very small B unit numbers in the center of the units
under the Burlington. That is why I made the comment. The first group of F3s,
nos. 116 - 121 were not delivered with Mars lights. Those were applied around
1950. The drawbars between the B units were replaced with couplers around 1950
- 51, although there is a photo of 116D in Texas in 1949 in the BRHS Flickr
folder that is operating as an A - B two unit consist. The date of the photo
could be wrong. There is an automobile in the background that may be newer than
1949, but I can’t make out the make or model. Most of the A units were
w=equipped with couplers a little later. Anyway, the models are perfect for the
era of Q power that I am interested in.
