Re the question regarding the age of an engineer in early 20th century. My only "source"..if you could call it that is some of the old stories I have read over the years in RAILROAD MAGAZINE. Just in reading these stories and the accompanying details of their "antics" and lifestyle I'm thinking that most of those engineers in those "wild and crazy days of the "BOOMERS" and the need for fast and rule breaking speed to meet "Perishable" schedules ie Bananas north from New Olreans (E.S. Dellinger's stories of fast runs over the "River and Hll Division) etc would have been late 20's--early 30's. Conductors would have been "in the same category".

Very interesting to see the diamond stack on this 2-8-0. From family history, and an obit from a local paper, the engineer (my great uncle) was not quite 28 when he died, and had been an engineer for 3 years. I don't know, but presume maybe he was a fireman before that. Was that a typical age for an engineer on the CB & Q at that time?
thanks
Eric
