I rode behind the 637 on an excursion on August 6, 1955 sponsored by the Iowa Chapter of the NRHS from Ft. Madison (IA) to Bloomfield and return.  The late Railfan-Photographer and later CB&Q operating officer and executive involved with the BN Merger Charlie ABle and I spent the night before the excursion driving  "Across Iowa"...not on the Keokuk and Western, but in Charlie's, alway immaculate 1952 Ford Sedan.     I believe the 637 now resides at the Museum at Union IL.  BTW I think that's the head brakeman "lounging" on that little and probably uncomfortable seat on the tender water leg.

All - Attached is an image of CB&Q Class K-2 4-6-0 No. 637 paused at Monmouth, IL, with the local passenger train in 1932.  The large turbo generator mounted on top the boiler between the sand and steam domes indicates 637 was also being used in Suburban Service between Aurora, IL, and Chicago Union Station during that era.

This is one of 18,610 CB&Q/C&S/FW&D images now posted to the CB&Q Flickr Page in the members section of the BRHS web site.  637 eventually became an exhibition locomotive for the Q and when retired it was donated to Aurora for display in a city park.  Later, 637 was moved to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL, where it resides today - Louis

I see in the photo that the Switch Foreman, John Lawrence, is wearing a sweater – is that how he got his nickname of “Fuzzy”?

Also interesting to note the various types of hats being worn…

The photo of #1307 and crew did not come through…can you re-send it?

I live in Abingdon, IL but work here in Monmouth so I find anything  on the local RR history interesting.

Thank you,

Peter

There was a partial history and a photo in the BRHS’s Zephyr #35 publication from 1997, with a note in Zephyr #36, as attached.

And thanks for sharing the photo of #1307

I would love to obtain a good photo and history of Costello Tower in Monmouth. It was named after a relative and my Grandpa worked in the tower as a young man. His father was the engineer of CB&Q Switcher 1307 in Monmouth.
