Lisle-

Huh?

If you have photos of CB&Q E Units without headlights in the nose door I sure would like to see them!!!

The only E units that ran on the Q that did not have them from the factory were 1) the EMC E2 demonstrator that ran on the East End and ended up on the KCS as an E3  2) the E5B units.

While the EMC styling art for the E5 with painted shovelnose windows instead of stripes did not have nose headlight, all the builders photos I’ve seen of E5As do.

If you are talking about the conversion of headlights and MARS lights to dual sealed beam bulbs from single incandescent bulbs that is another discussion yet to be researched for both E and F Units!!

Subject: [CBQ] Dual Headlight conversions on the E5s

I'm curious if there was a particular event or time that triggered the conversion of the E5s to having dual headlights?  I've reviewed the E5 Bulletin, and find no information on this. I've wondered if the units were converted when they went from black to red markings. In the bulletin, and I've not recently reviewed any other sources for this idea, all of the photos of units that have black stripes are single lights, the red units are dual. That's true in all of the color shots, and in the black and white one where the color can be deduced that holds true as well. The only exception is the 9911. It's safe to say it kept it's dual lighting when it was painted in to the black scheme at IRM.

One logical reason for the conversion might be to get a more uniform appearance relative to the E7s and E8s. However I wonder if something like an ICC regulation might have made it necessary to make the conversion. Maybe it became necessary to add emergency lighting, or CBQ chose to do it and felt adding the dual lighting was a convenient thing to do? It might have been a technology improvement that gave stronger/better lighting. In any case, it would seem to coincide with or at least near the red conversion.

Thx for any thoughts, information
