One of the nice things about aperture cards is they usually contain information as to what was the original size of the microfilmed document.

To be able to print to your scan full size of the original, the scans need to be  done in "Black and White" mode with a final resolution of 300 dpi at the full size. This seems to give the best balance between file size, pixillation and legibility.

My recommendations come from the fact that for many years I was a technical support and installation specialist for wide format engineering and architectural scanning and printing systems. I supported and installed systems all over the US and Canada. Over that same period I probably scanned over a million documents when we contracted to digitize a customers drawing and specification files so that they could use them with Autocad, eliminate the paper originals and reclaim the floor space used storage.

If anyone needs or wants any help or information I can furnish; feel free to contact me on or off list.

Charlie,

You should be able to simply place the microfilm card in the upper right hand corner of the flat bed and scan in the transparency mode using the lid back light. I use that method with my Epson 2450 photo scanner any time that i have an odd size transparency for which I dont have a template. Using the right and top edges of the scanner will provide a good guide to square the media. I have also "eye balled media to approximately square and then straightened the image with photo software after the scan is complete.

All-

Looking at the online instructions for my MP990 it appears that I will be able to duplicate the strip film/slide holder with a custom one made from styrene that will hold the 35mm aperture cards in the correct orientation and give good results.

I will have to dig out slides to scan as well with the stock holder!!

Thanks,
Charlie
