Dave,

This looks to be the Silver Streak Zephyr's original consist with one exception. The RPO-Storage Mail car assigned to the Silver Streak for it's inaugural service (1600 Silver Sheen) looks to be substituted with another 52 seat Chair car for this demonstration run.

Thanks for everyone’s responses to my question!  Based upon the answers and another photo of the same train in Dubuque on March 17, 1940, it has been decided that this is the 9909 and Silver Streak Zephyr headed to Dubuque from Chicago that same day.  The Waterman-Shabbona location seems to be the consensus, so that’s what we’ll go with in the caption.  Leo, the file name indicated “9900 first trip Chicago to D”…hence my guess that the D stood for Denver, but now see that the D is for Dubuque!  This image will be in the forthcoming Burlington Bulletin on the E5s.

Leo and Others:

There were searchlight interlocking signals at this location in 1940.  The automatic block signals were still 2 blade lower quad semaphores until 1942, at which time CTC was installed between Aurora and Steward Jct., and the semaphores were replaced with 3-color light signals.  The searchlight interlocking signals remained.  My opinion is that this location is between Waterman and Shabbona prior to 1942.
