Leo and Others:
There were searchlight interlocking signals at this location in 1940. The automatic block signals were still 2 blade lower quad semaphores until 1942, at which time CTC was installed between Aurora and Steward Jct., and the semaphores were replaced with
3-color light signals. The searchlight interlocking signals remained. My opinion is that this location is between Waterman and Shabbona prior to 1942.

Subject: Re: [CBQ] Location?
Here are a couple observations.
1) if you blow the photo up and look behind the train and tower a bit to the left appears to be a road. If this is BX crossing that is today's route 30.
2) looking at the enlarged photo in the same area as above you will note the uphill slope.
That is Waterman hill,if this is BX crossing.
3) was there a search light signal at this location at this date ? Glen H. what say you ?
Finally, when I first saw the photo my immediate thought was BX crossing between Waterman and Shabbona but then I read Dave's comment that it was on the mainline so up until now I've remained silent.

I guess that is the location. The aerial photo from 1933 shows the small shed to the right of the tower right where it should be. We apparently can't see US30. Photo is from ILHAP historic aerial photography website.
Dave:
That image appears on p. 85 of Karl Zimmerman's Zephyr book. It's identified as a Chicago-Dubuque excursion trip operated on March 17, 1940 using the Silver Streak Zephyr equipment
before it was placed into regular service. The train is westbound between Waterman and Shabbona, IL and has just crossed C&NW's Sycamore-Spring Valley line.

Hi all,
Attached is an image of the 9909 on its first trip from Chicago to Denver. Can anyone identify the location where the photo was taken?
