This year the Downers Grove Historical Society,Downers Grove Museum and the
Park district are highlighting the arrival and history of the Burlington in
Downers Grove as the theme of their annual Founders Day, multi-day festivities.
These organizations have invited the BRHS to give a presentation on "The
History of the Burlington Route in Downers Grove" . This will cover the
arrival, development and changes on the line through the BN merger. I will be
using internal Q documents, engineering drawings, plat and Sanborn maps. The
bulk of the presentation will be photos from the BRHS Flicker site(only BRHS
members have access) and especially numerous photos loaned by the sponsoring
organizations, many of which I had never seen before.
Some of the topics to be covered are the depots,roundhouses, interlocking
towers, the suburban train yard, team and industry tracks and the industries
they served. Some time will be devoted to the 1947 Twin Zephyr derailment into
the depot. However given an hour and a half presentation, time will not allow
deep dive studies of any particular subject. The audience will be referred to
particular BRHS publications for those insights.
The company store will be at this event.
Seating is limited to 80 and registration is required. In talking with the
sponsors last week the auditorium was already 25% full and they were expecting
seats to continue filling. So I encourage those interested to register soon in
one of the following ways for class 220003-01.
