To my knowledge, the trucks or skirts on the Es were never painted black. I think it is a combination of shadows and accumulated road grime that account for the dark color. Dave Lotz and I have recently received the manuscript for the E5 Bulletin and I'm sure the answer will be in there if no one else can say definitively.
