If I recall correctly from one of Larry Schrenk's books on NP steam, Pioneer Steam Era, NP tried unsuccessfully a couple of locomotives with Wooten fireboxes. A subsequent experiment with ordinary but larger, deeper fireboxes was successful. It is notable that NP developed the 4-8-4 and 2-8-8-4 types in its quest to burn Rosebud lignite. The Class A 4-8-4 was a USRA Heavy Mountain with a bigger firebox, and was not considered to be a Superpower engine. I suspect that it was, given a diet of bituminous coal, or perhaps oil. The A-1, NP 2626 was a Superpower 4-8-4 with essentially the same specs.
