Just little real railroading note on this subject. Air horns did indeed freeze up and get clocked with snow. It didn't happen often but I made more than one trip across the C&I blowing the horn from the second unit when the lead unit horn became inoperative. And no extra pay or arbitrary timeslip !?
A entire separate discussion would be clogged sanders. They happened more often than clogged horns. While not an everyday occurrence they were frequent enough in winter. Helped a few times unclogging sanders with a coat hanger, hammer and fussee.
Nothing like kneeling or laying in the snow shoving a wire up the sand pipe.
Ah yes, the good old days ! Sometimes, well actually often they weren't so good.
What is it that Pete often says, "what we endured with pain we remember with fondness"?
Leo Phillipp I have used Custom Finishing part # 197 "Shrouded Horn". I believe it was brass, but don't have any that aren't installed so can't be sure of that.

Details West part #347 is the shrouded style the Q used it's a pewter casting. I also have one in brass, but don't remember who made it.

They were equipped with the Q standard S-2M horns, albeit in a type of shroud. That shroud was GE's attempt at keeping the horns from freezing or getting clogged with snow in winter. I surmise it wasn't very successful as it never caught on.
