Note the "outbound" engineer on the ladder wearing a white cap..That was pretty much standard fare at that time...Those old engine crews were proud of their jobs and when the diesels came along they dressed as if to say.."Look at us...we don't have to "get dirty" any more. Even though the white was primarily worn by the passenger engine crews some of the engineers I worked with back in the 50's wore white, even in freight service.
