Right on Mike W...I grew up in Rock Port and rode the Villlisca-Corning train many times..Get my Video Memories DVD and see things from the 50's...The line was severed between Northboro, IA and Clarinda in Sept 58...Takio Depot..nice brick job..stood vacant for many years and was demolished about 3 years ago...There have been some attempts to re open Tarkio College, but not significant progress...Tarkio-Rock Port and other towns around there are dieing...

Let us not forget the Owls of Tarkio College.  Tarkio, MO was on the Corning-Villisca branch, still served by a mixed train into the late 1950s.  My dad was a Tarkio grad (class of '36).  The college outlasted the branch, but not by a whole lot.  They closed their doors in 1991.

Also the Worlds of Fun locomotive in Kansas City has ELI painted on tender.

Back in January 2015, there was a short discussion about Old Eli, the CB&Q’s owl. He was used in various advertisements, there was the Eli Limited between Chicago and Kansas City, an Old Eli dining car on the Kansas City Flyer (renamed from the Eli Limited?) and there was the Fast Owl Express between Chicago and St Louis. The 1901 advert for the Eli Express for stated it had been running for 16 years so presumably it started about 1885. Does anyone have an earlier reference to Eli or a date when the Kansas City Flyer received that name?

In a biography of Charles Elliott Perkins (who was President of the CB&Q 1876-1901), it stated that the family home when he was growing up was named “The Owl’s Nest”. Coincidence?
