Pete,

As you know, the name was changed during World War II to avoid any reference to General Togo of the Japanese Armed Forces. Togo Iowa became Giles Iowa. It was on the St. Joe-Charitan branch.

Bryan:

I queried Bill Schultz about the 9900's exhibition appearances, and here's his reply:

Without replicating the entire list (stored with the manuscript on a separate computer), here's a partial list including all 9900 pre-revenue-service activity at Atchison, Leavenworth, and St. Joseph:

Monday June 11, 1934          St. Joseph, Mo. exhibition (Union Station)
                                               Atchison, Kan. exhibition (Union Station)
                                               Leavenworth, Kan. exhibition

Friday November 2, 1934      St. Joseph-Togo, Ia.-St. Joseph circle excursion (St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce)
Wednesday November 7        Seven St. Joseph-Napier, Mo., round-trip excursions
Thursday November 8            Weston, Mo.-St. Joseph round-trip excursion
Four Atchison-East Leavenworth, Mo., round-trip excursions
Friday November 9                Five Leavenworth-Armour, Mo., round-trip excursions

There were wyes at both Atchison (at the west end of the Missouri River bridge; north leg CB&Q; east and west legs MoPac) and Armour, so there would have been no need to back the train in either direction between the two stations.

After looking at photos of St. Joe Union Depot, the Atchison depot and the photo that started this thread. I'm inclined to believe that the photo is at St. Joe and not Atchison. The PZ looks to be under the stand-alone umbrella shelter visible in the St. Joe photos. The Atchison depot does not have this. For it to be Atchison, the PZ would have to be much closer to the depot.

Thanks for the discussion on this. We were hoping to use it for the 2019 calendar to represent Kansas, so I guess we are back to the drawing board in regards to finding a photo of the Q in Kansas. I'll let the Kansas state library know that the date and location they have for the photo are incorrect.
