Bill - Thanks for advising that the motors ran-around the exhibition Zephyr consist at East Leavenworth and then pulled it backwards to Kansas City. Best Regards - Louis

Louis,

There was a wye at East Leavenworth. It was 90 lb rail with cinder ballast. So it would have been possible have the locomotives run around the train for the return move to Kansas City. The Q served the two largest industries in Leavenworth - a farm equipment manufacturer who's name escapes me at the moment and what became Bay State Milling. At an auction several years I bought the records collection out of the Leavenworth office the last year it was open (1982) at an auction. However, there was no Q material after I went through it all, just BN material and regular complaint letters from Bay State Milling to the BN about the local engine crew running their loco over their scale.

Hubert - Thanks for positively ID'ing the image of the Zephyr train paused at East Leavenworth, MO.  And I'll now go along with Pete's comments about the man in the hat and coat standing beneath the sign as possibly being a train master riding the special movement. What's even more interesting to me is that my dad was train master at St. Joseph, MO, at the time.  So, that person might indeed be my dad.  Was there a wye at East Leavenworth to turn the exhibition train, or did the motors run around it for the return trip to Kansas City? Best Regards - Louis

I have a souvenir silver Burlington Route ticket for then exposition runs using equipment from the Kansas City Zephyr and American Royal Zephyr, issued for Kansas City to East Leavenworth and return, January 31, 1953 "aboard the Vista Dome Kansas City Zephyr including some of the Pullman cars assigned to the NEW overnight AMERICAN ROYAL ZEPHYR" The schedule on the ticket shows the excursion trains left Kansas City Union Station at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm and 7:00pm.  The ticket I have was punched for the 3pm trip.

I have seen this photo of the KCZ Vista Dome Parlor at East Leavenworth before. It was titled as being one of the debut excursion runs.

My collection also includes a KCZ/ARZ exhibition ticket for the trips from Quincy to Hannibal on January 26, 1953, departing Quincy at 330pm, 500pm and 630pm.

Great photo of the KCZ and ARZ equipment, and the Bulletin issue on the DZ is excellent!
