In the photo with the single steam generator exhaust extension, that particular unit has two boilers. You can see two air intakes, which indicates to steam generators. They are just exhausting out of single outlet instead of two. Single boiler would be one intake and one outtake. The Q seemed to prefer the twin steam generator. Though the E5's only had one. When you put two boilers in the same space as a single, it doesn't take college physics to tell you that you have either one large steam generator or two small steam generators.

Theory is with two, if one fails, and they did, you still have one that is working. In the late 1960's shortly before the Burlington Northern merger, the Q took two E8's which had twin boilers each and removed one of the steam generators. In place of the removed boiler the Q installed a genset for producing electricity for the suburban cars. At this time the Budd Bi-Levels got their electricity from power car, which was a heavyweight semi-streamlined car which had a genset in one end and regular seating in the rest of the space. The air conditioning on the Budd's was provided by Waukesha propane fired ice engines. The heat was steam! So with the one steam generator and the genset, they wouldn't need the power car.

Bill,

Thanks much for responding.

I'm modeling 9935A and 9935B (the numbers Walthers chose) with the red nose stripes.

Here's a shot of 9935A without the doghouse--presumably at a time previous to my period of interest.

Here's a shot of 9935A WITH the doghouse (only one):

You can see the trailing unit also has only one doghouse.  For my purposes, I'm going to assume it's 9935B.  Perhaps incorrectly.  But there are/were at least these two E's that had only one doghouse.

With only one doghouse, compared to the two of many of the other E7's, it seems likely that there would have only been half as many steam generators:  one.  I find that interesting.

Your suggestion that the doghouse is to minimize over-pressure exhaust steam problems is also interesting.  But then, why aren't the doghouses on other units?  The E8's and E9's?

Thanks,

Ed
