Ed,
While I don’t have the photo that you are looking for, I can add a little information. The first E7s, 9916 A-B through 9924 A-B, were equipped with one steam generator at the rear of the unit. The steam generator was mounted on the center line of the locomotive, immediately behind the rear air compressor. The last two units of the first order and all subsequent Q E7s including the odd numbered 9937A and 9949, were equipped with two Vapor Clarkson 4225 steam generators, mounted at the rear of the locomotive in each rear corner, leaving the access to the centered rear door open. The “doghouses’ are shown on the general arrangement drawing of the E7 in BRHS Burlington Bulletin No. 10, but there is no detail. There is also no mention of the devices in the text. Photos indicate that they were added somewhere during the service life of the units, but were not original equipment. I believe the devices were a diffuser for the steam generator steam over pressure exhaust which otherwise, vented straight up. In places like Union Station, that might not be desirable as it would knock down years of accumulated soot.
Hopefully, someone has a good reference photo for you. Obviously, if your models are equipped with the singe steam generator, they should be numbered below 9925 A-B and should have only the three black nose stripes unless you are modeling the later Chinese red era.
