Thanks Nelson. I reviewed the Burlington Bulletin covering the XM-32 series last night, and none of the photos show the stenciled appearance of the lettering. And it isn't mentioned in the paint and lettering diagram reproduced on the back cover, so I'm surmising that the two cars I describe are unofficial , perhaps "one-off" paint jobs. 

The stencil breaks are subtle on the CB&Q car I mentioned, but quite obvious on the FW&D car. In some areas the break is a good 2-3", now that I look at the photo again.
