I don't know about E Units but on freight units sand hoses were in place and used in the late 60s and early 70s while I was helping around Eola rdhse. Units going for heavier repairs came and went via freights. Great fun trying to match up hoses between unlike units and different mfgs. Especially When tags marking the functions were missing. Even more fun when picking up or trading power while in route during the night with snow blowing. Did that a few times up until the late 70s.

Apparently, there used to be sanding hoses, but that control function went up to the MU electrical cable.  And the sanding hoses were deleted.  I don't have a clue when that happened.

I think there were often two hoses, one for forward and one for reverse.
