 Nancy and Scott,

Here's what I can share about question 1) for grain on the C&I. When grain moved by rail from local elevators on the C&I, as well as all the other Q branch lines and on other, lines in Northern IL the grain went primarily to the grain inspection tracks at Clyde. My memory is that was track 4 or 6 in "D" yard. After inspection, which included a moisture test, the grain was then purchased and moved to the buyers elevators or to mills. Going way back these were along the Chicago river and many were owned by the RRs and were operated by contractors. Later the business moved to elevators along the Calumet harbor and river.

I could write for many more paragraphs about how the locals distributed mtys. and picked up loads but I think I'll save that for a possible future article. See me at the Spring Meet for some true stories and tales handed down by the old heads about grain handling.

All,

Nancy and I have two questions for the group that will help us in our layout planning.  Please feel free to chime in on either.

1)  Many if not all towns on the C&I had grain elevators.  However, we're not aware of any milling facilities on the line.  Where would the grain from those local elevators have been taken for milling?

2)  We're seeing that Atlas has a CB&Q S-1 switcher available.  Where on the "Q" system would this switcher have been used?  We're wondering if we MUST 😉 pick one up.

Thanks to all for your help.
