After Dave and Bob pointed out the location I was able to find the photos I remembered. I
went to Mike Spoor's CB&Q in Color Vol. 2 and found the photos I was thinking of. There
are four of Mike Nelson’s photos on those four pages covering Galena Jct and Portage
(pages 78-81). One of Mike’s shots (page 79) is closer to the CB&Q bridge
crossing the Galena River. I forgot the bridge was single track, then goes to
double track right after it crosses the river westbound (compass northbound).
The two shots on page 81 are really neat as they both show the CB&Q signal
bridge that the shots of the EB/NCL and CGW freight were taken from! I never realized either that Galena Jct and Portage were right across the Galena River from each other. This would be an awesome spot to model as you have the Q and CGW on the Galena Junction side both converging to single track over the Galena River bridge then you have the IC swing in from its route from Galena and the Q and CGW actually go onto the IC trackage. Two major junctions, three major railroads, and a river bridge. What's not to like! BTW, in many of the shots there are some tank cars sitting at Portage. Is this the Q/IC/CGW interchange track? Anyone have any details as to how interchange worked between Q/IC/CGW at Portage/Galena Jct?
