Eric,

I am fortunate enough to have a complete set of Aurora ETTs from 1939 to merger thanks to years of hunting and the generosity of a certain BRHS member. I also have
A small collection of Aurora Division "horse blankets" ETTs going back to 1895. Here's
What I found : tt#47 of 4/28/57 is the first time a "Y" is shown for Ottawa. It's not there
In #46 dated 10/28/56 or earlier. I spot checked the early 50's,40's,30's,20's and even my 1908 and 1895 issues. No "Y" until 1957.
It's still there in #3 dated 1/18/70. Also there's no "T" sign ever.

So the "roustabout" would have had to run the roughly 14 miles from Ottawa to Burgess Jct in reverse one way or the other !? Not sure I'd like going up or down Wedron hill in a steam engine in reverse pulling a train.

I once asked how far the engineers agreement allowed locos run backwards and the response was a not totally sure 25 miles.

Leo,

The wye at Ottawa only existed for a period of years - the beginning and ending of which I am not sure of.  I have an Employee Time Table from 1954 and the column for Signs in Ottawa does not list Y.  For years the lead from the main to the sand plants  curved in from the south and the remnants can still be seen in Google satellite images.  At some point before the steam excursions, the north leg was put in.  In the past this leg was not possible as it curved up over the I&M canal.  Eventually the south leg was removed.  Someone with a collection of ETTs could find when the Y designation was included in the Ottawa Signs column to see when it was put in.
